Free Resources on the Web

Bandolier
Begun in 1994 as a journal written by Oxford scientists about evidence-based healthcare, Bandolier aims to "find information about evidence of effectiveness (or lack of it), and put the results forward as simple bullet points of those things that worked and those that did not: a bandolier with bullets". Their staff searches PubMed and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews monthly for systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized trials, and other high-quality observational and epidemiologic studies. Selected studies, reviewed first in the paper journal, appear on their website's Knowledge Center in categories alphabetically.

SUMSearch
This free search engine was developed at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio when their librarians despaired of teaching students to comprehensively search for evidence (see its Details about SUMSearch). It searches DARE, PubMed, and the National Guideline Clearinghouse for evidence-based works, which it displays from general to specific with color codes. You may select specialized filters for EBM question types and limit by age, human and English. Its filter for systematic reviews has been updated to reflect the article (in Dec. 24, 2004 BMJ) entitled "Optimal search strategies for retrieving systematic reviews from Medline."

TRIP Database
Started in 1997 as a small search engine with a focus on articles considered evidence-based, the Turning Research into Practice Database aims to allow health professionals to easily find the highest-quality material available on the Web. It specializes in question-and-answer systems which focus on, where possible, evidence-based material. Non-subscribers are currently restricted to 5 free searches per week. Tufts does not subscribe.

InfoPOEMs
InfoPOEMs was founded in the 1990s to collect Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters. A Tufts clinician, Allen Shaughnessy, edits Journal of Family Practice POEMs. DailyPOEMs are emailed gratis, Hirsh Health Sciences Library is in process of licensing InfoRetriever, its database of synopsized, evidence-based content and tools, which include all POEMs and Cochrane Systematic Review abstracts, more than 200 decision-support tools and diagnostic calculators, over 700 summaries of evidence-based practice guidelines, and Griffith's 5-Minute Clinical Consult.

Resources Not Available at Tufts

FIRSTConsult
In the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes sections of its Medical Condition Files, the best available evidence and evidence-based guidelines are integrated into a typical work-up. Evidence is summarized principally from Cochrane Systematic Reviews, Clinical Evidence, and the National Guideline Clearinghouse based on the American Academy of Family Physicians' rating system. Elsevier offers a free 30-day trial.
